University of Texas at Arlington’s Department of Theatre Arts Presents BALM IN GILEAD by Lanford Wilson

The University of Texas at Arlington’s Maverick Theatre Company presents a dynamic play reading of BALM IN GILEAD.

BALM IN GILEAD is set in an all-night coffee shop on New York’s upper Broadway, where the riff-raff, the bums, the petty thieves, the lost, the desperate of the big city come together. The movement of the kaleidoscopic in effect, a surging mosaic of overlapping and interrelating speeches and action as separate goals and characters are blended together around a common center. At the core of the play are Joe and Darlene, two young people who would seem to have the strength and the need to transcend the turmoil and ugliness of the life in which they found themselves, but are instead, crushed by it. Their loss is quickly absorbed in the maelstrom, as the others go on desperately seeking the joy and release and purpose in life which will, most certainly, continue to escape them.

BALM IN GILEAD will be streamed via Video On Demand from November 20 – 22, 2020 due to the ongoing pandemic. To purchase the Video On Demand rental, please visit the virtual box office.

University of Texas at Arlington’s Department of Theatre Arts Presents SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD

The University of Texas at Arlington’s Maverick Theatre Company presents SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD. It is the first musical from Tony Award winner, Jason Robert Brown (Parade, Bridges of Madison County). This moving collection of powerful songs examines life, love and the choices that we make.

SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD is about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice or take a stand or turn around and go back. These are the stories and characters of today. Be transported to the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship and to a ledge 57 stories above Fifth Avenue. Meet a startling array of characters that range from a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto to a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs her the man of her dreams... and a soulless marriage. With a powerhouse, driving, and exquisitely crafted score, it runs the gamut of today’s popular music.
