Arlington, The Dream City Gets DREAM
Imagine standing at the base of a giant capital letter “D,” made of metal and reaching 12 feet into the sky. Within the letter, there are perfect rows of cut outs, each in the shape of a flying bird. Four more letters, similarly forged form the word: DREAM.
Within the next couple of days, visitors will begin to see DREAM emerging right in the middle of downtown Arlington. Visitors will also be able to experience the debut of its impressive lighting elements at a dedication event with the artists, planned for September 25 at 7:00 p.m.
Before Dream came to Downtown Arlington, it enjoyed an inaugural run at the annual Burning Man festival, held in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada in early September. Of Dream, Rolling Stone magazine observed, “If Instagram is any guide, Dream — the latest in a series of 12-foot steel sculptures by Laura Kimpton and Jeff Schomberg — was the most popular venue for selfies and snapshots at Burning Man 2015.” Artist Jeff Schomberg said, “We’re excited to have our piece in Arlington, Texas ... particularly one with such a strong connection to the City’s identity.” “While the cache of showing at Burning Man enhances the story of the piece,” said Bob Pruitt, photographer, entrepreneur, and the mastermind behind the project, “the selection of the word ‘dream’ for the sculpture happened organically, right here in Arlington. It was inspired by the City of Arlington brand Arlington, The American Dream City.”
While a permanent location for the sculpture has not been finalized, First Baptist Church-Arlington has agreed in the interim to host the sculpture on its downtown property, which is adjacent to the Levitt Pavilion Founders Plaza at 100 West Abram Street. The dedication event for Dream on September 25 will be held at the site. No RSVPs required. The dedication is being held in conjunction with the South St. Art Festival and folk rock musician Luke Wade’s appearance at the Levitt Pavilion. Admission is free for all events.
For more information about Dream or to donate to the project, visit the DREAM website or follow DREAM Park on Facebook.

Downtown Front and Center
Front Street between Center and Mesquite Streets in Downtown Arlington, TX will be transformed into a vibrant streetscape and the adjacent vacant city-owned lot will become a park for one day, April 28, 2012 from 11 am - 3 pm.Masters Students from the School of Urban and Public Affairs and School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Arlington are partnering to create a unique economic development opportunity in the heart of downtown Arlington. Downtown Front and Center is a temporary “better block” and park installation inspired by previous projects in Oak Cliff and downtown Dallas. It will bring together local businesses, community organizations, and UTA students, and demonstrate how a currently underutilized space can develop into something that gives back to the community. It will help participants and visitors realize the potential of downtown Arlington.
Local businesses, arts groups and artists will be there in addition to food and music. There will even be a pop up dog park. So come out and enjoy the fun. While you are there you can even stroll just down the block to the Downtown Arlington Farmers Market.
